Chapter Twelve

Shit! He’s going to kill Bradley. Cody leaped the fence. “Liam, no!” He landed with a thump and darted toward his mate. It was Liam’s prerogative as pack alpha, but it would involve endless complications. If Liam killed Bradley in wolf form, Bradley would never change back to his human body. Bradley Karr would just disappear. Last known whereabouts? Liam Reed’s house.

He ran up to Liam, dropped to his knees, and got right in his mate’s face. “Liam!”

Liam growled low in his throat. He paused with his teeth surrounding Bradley’s throat, but didn’t look up.

“Don’t! You won. Don’t kill him.”

The snarling alpha finally glared at his mate, fangs bared. Cody fought his instinct to recoil. “He’s not worth it. He lost. He knows. Look at him.”

Liam glowered at Bradley, who yipped pitifully, his neck bared.

Growling again, Liam focused on Cody.

“Please, Liam.”

Liam leaped clear of Bradley and shifted back to human. Cody flinched at the sight of his mate covered in blood and grass stains. Bite marks marred his skin. Cody knew they would heal, but they had to hurt.

Bradley shifted as well and kept his bare ass on the ground. He put his hands in front of him, palms up in surrender.

Liam moved to tower over his would-be challenger. “Bradley Karr. I hereby banish you. You are a lone wolf now, packless.”

Gasps surrounded Cody. Banishment was a severe punishment for pack animals like wolves.

“No, Alpha. Please, you won,” Bradley yelped.

Cody wondered if he should intervene further, but then Bradley’s earlier conversation with Thomas stayed his hand. Perhaps this was for the best.

“You are banished. This is my law.” Liam’s voice was hard and full of menace.

Bradley pushed himself to standing, resentment in his eyes, but he quickly found his keys in the grass and left.

Liam took a moment to glance around at his pack. His stance was confident and his eyes glittered like diamond shards. “Anyone else? Michael, Leroy, you want a go?”

“No, Alpha.” Michael tilted his head sideways, baring his neck while keeping his eyes locked on the ground.

Leroy also exposed his neck. “No, sir.”

Liam glowered at the assembled pack members. “Fine. Let that be a reminder. I prefer to think of the pack as family, but I will not tolerate disrespect for my mate or blatant disregard for my authority.” Liam stared them all down. He picked up his tattered clothing and went into the house.

Cody considered the wide-eyed faces of those around him. It suddenly occurred to him he should try to smooth the ruffled fur of this pack. His pack.

He scanned around and cleared his throat.

“It seems that was a long time in coming. Liam did as an alpha should, as any alpha would, when challenged. But it changes nothing. He wanted today to be a day to celebrate. A day for me to get to know all of you. So, please, eat, drink, and enjoy this beautiful summer weather. I’m sure Liam will be out soon.”

Cody heard grumbling from the crowd. If they left, it would lead to more strife.
